One of the biggest tenets of my philosophy of education is that every student can learn... we just have to give them the tools necessary to do so! Consequently, I like to take time every few weeks to see where the K kids are in terms of learning and form instruction around their needs. Last week I reassessed little ones in reading and math skills, and you're going to see some subsequent instructional changes coming in Room 123 (and the K kids and I are BEYOND excited for it!!).
Reading: I tested each kiddo to see what strategy they were using to figure out unknown words. I then made new reading groups based on the strategies they are using. You may hear your little one talking about how they are now a Caterpillar, Bumblebee, Dragonfly, or Butterfly - this is in reference to their reading group =) Each group has a specific skill they are working on. As a result, books that come home may be harder or easier than books they had before! I'm sending a Reading Note home tomorrow so you can see exactly what I'm working on with your little one! In a few weeks I'll retest them again to see if they've made improvement! =)
Math: The biggest instructional changes are coming tomorrow in Math! We are going to spend our entire math time completing rotations just like we do in reading. We used to have a rotation that let me see one math group a day for small group math instruction and the rest of math instruction was completed whole group. Now we've made some changes so that I can get to see each K kid EVERY SINGLE DAY for small group math instruction - wahoooo! =) This part of our day is going to be completely different than how we've done math before, so if your little one seems a bit off of their routine this may be why. As wonderful as your little ones do during reading centers, I know they're going to do just as great at math centers!
Hopefully you'll see some improvement in your little one's reading and math confidence and abilities! I'm sososo excited to be back with them and teaching them in a brand new way - I missed them so much the past few days!
